The Swainson's hawk is the most common hawk in Texas and occurs over the entire state.

Generally, any large hawk seen soaring over Texas in the winter is a redtail until proven otherwise.  There are at least four subspecies of redtail hawks in Texas:  Eastern, Kriders, Fuertes and Western - and all are the most easily identifiable soarking hawks because of their red tails.
